Legal Challenge to Manatee Zones

Standing Watch, a boaters advocacy group, has challenged the manatee refuge zones approved by Florida Fish and Wildlife last May, arguing that they will cause more manatee deaths because manatees can only hear slow moving boats when they are very close to them. Proponents of the refuges argue that manatee deaths decline where similar refuges have been established in the past. A decision in the case is expected in late December.
