Boaters Suggest a Solution to Manatee Impacts
From Daytona Beach News.

Ed Gerstein, a director of marine mammal science at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton has invented a high-pitched underwater warning signal which boaters say could be used to alert manatees of approaching danger. Several years ago he invented the devise which emits sound in the optimal hearing range for manatees. When attached to the bow of a boat it can reach manatees up to 660 feet away. Critics say it would modify manatees natural behavior by forcing them to avoid boaters instead of helping boaters avoid manatees. Also, a manatee may need to get hit once before they could associate the sound with boats.
