DEP's Total Maximum Daily Loading (TMDL).
Daryll Joyner from the Florida DEP gave a presentation on the DEP’s Total Maximum Daily Loading (TMDLs) rule and their plan for designating TMDLs for water bodies. He explained that TMDLs for the Surface Water Improvement and Management Plan (SWIM) waters will be based on Pollutant Load Reduction Goals created by the Water Management Districts. Most of the Indian River Lagoonwill be assessed in 2004-2009, according to the criteria set in the DEP’s TMDL Rule. (see Marker Summer 2001) This rule has been legally challenged by environmental groups who argue that the rule will drop polluted waters from the list. The hearings were completed in September with big industries defending the DEP’s position. A ruling is expected in January of 2002.
