Gil Kennedy of the Waterfront Council gave an update on the Port of Ft. Pierce. A partnership from Michigan has purchased Port property and is working with Lloyd Bell to bring in a cargo port. However the Lurssen Yacht building firm is still in negotiations with the County for their berths and has extended the time the county needs for another month. Bill Hearn from the Waterfront Council presented their desire to see economic development, like the yacht builders instead of increasing the cargo usage. There is concern that the activities such as dredging for cargo ships and the release of ballast water containing invasive species will damage the lagoon. (see Marker Summer 2000)
