Proposal to Extend Indian River Lagoon Boundaries

Volusia County’s proposal to extend the boundaries of the Indian River Lagoon could bring more money to improve the Halifax and Tomoka Rivers. The proposal is still in its early stages, but if approved could bring water quality improvements and restoration and acquisition of habitat. As a result of MRC efforts, the lagoon was designated in 1987 by the state as a priority water body in need of restoration and special protection. In 1991, the MRC nomination of the Indian River Lagoon was accepted as part of the National Estuary Program. The designation helps secure funds for local governments from state and federal sources. The county council and cities along the lagoon will vote on whether to put together an application, then the St. Johns River Water Management District and the EPA would give final approval.
