Mysterious Dolphin Deaths In Lagoon

Megan Stolen from Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute gave a presentation on their efforts to determine the cause of the large number of dolphin deaths that occurred in the Lagoon in Brevard County, summer 2001. The dolphins were found to be extremely thin and some were found with unusual objects such as parts of tires and fish hooks in their stomachs indicating they may have had difficulty finding food. Some also had pufferfish in their stomachs which is not part of their normal diet. Lagoon pufferfish have recently been found to contain toxin not previously found in them before. It is not known if these factors are related.
