Shoreline Restoration St. Lucie/Martin County

On the left Ruby and Wally Kramer plant Red Mangroves on the shoreline in Indian River County. Mangroves reduce erosion and trap sediment in their roots building shoreline. Their roots resist storm surges and have survived even hurricane winds and storm surges. Mangroves filter runoff, improving water quality and provide shelter for juvenile fish in flooded root systems and nesting areas in their branches for birds. The very dry winter made many wetland areas accessible in Indian River County allowing treatment of 2,567,900 square feet of Brazilian pepper along 8,655 feet of the St. Sebastian River shoreline. A Big Thanks go out to volunteers Ruby and Wally Kramer, Tim Glover, Laura Colon, and Allen Griffiths.
