Mangrove Collecting Time!

It is that time of year when mangrove propagules start washing up on our shores. The propagules are more than a seed, they are already a miniature plant just looking for a home. Mangroves filter pollutants from runoff and their leaves provide food to the food chain. We need to restock our supply of seedlings to be planted along the Lagoon. During the fall you can collect mangrove propagules that are floating around the Lagoon or washed up on the beaches. Red mangrove propagules resemble green pencils and need to be kept in water until they are planted in soil. A seedling with roots should not be collected in the lagoon and maygrow by itself. We have started our Fifth Annual Mangrove Propagule Contest. Last year’s winner was Surfside Elementary. Winners of this year’s contest will receive a pizza party and an award. Call (321) 504-4500 if you would like donate propagules to be raised in our green house.
