Brevard Zoo Sponsors Whale Program

Whale License Plates Available Jan. 2003

The calf count for last season reached 21! Unfortunately, there were a total of five mortalities. According to Amy Knowlton from the New England Aquarium, one calf died from unknown causes and a yearling died due to fishing gear entanglement. Three animals were either calves or yearlings that were seen in the mid-Atlantic during the summer. Nobody has determined what the whales were doing in such warm water that time of year. Of those three, one died from a ship strike but the others were too decomposed to determine cause of death. There were also eight reported entanglements. Besides the yearling that died, one whale freed herself and the remaining six have potentially fatal entanglements.
