The first of three test wells will be constructed this April in Port Mayaca. The test wells will help determine whether the aquifer storage and recovery system will work on a much larger scale. 333 underground storage wells with a cost of $1.7 billion are proposed to be built around Lake Okeechobee, the Caloosahatchee River, and throughout South Florida. They are a controversial part of the $8 billion Everglades restoration plan
