With final permits for a muck containment area, the St. Johns River Water Management District could begin dredging the St. Sebastian River in spring 2004. The anticipated 2.25 million cubic yards of muck would be stored south of Micco Road on about 175 acres owned by the district. Detrimental effects of the salt water and muck mixing with freshwater wetlands and its wildlife inhabitants was a major factor in choosing an appropriate containment location.

Another factor addressed prior to the commencement of dredging was the water that enters the St. Sebastian River from Sottile Canal. It adds muck to the St. Sebastian, so the St. Johns River Water Management District is creating a storm-water park and lake. This 200 acre project will help with temporary water storage from Sottile Canal. The lake will aid in sediment settling before the canal's water is released into the St. Sebastian River.
