Entangled Right Whale Spotted in January

On January 26 a right whale aerial survey team consisting of 3 scientists and a pilot crashed approximately eight miles off the coast of Fernandina Beach. The twin-engine Cessna took off from St. Simon's Island, Georgia around 2:30 p.m. and was reported overdue at 6:30 p.m. that night.

The Coast Guard located the emergency beacon at approximately 9:30 p.m. and found debris in the area including life jackets, a backpack, papers, and film canisters.

The right whale community is saddened by the loss of researchers Jackie Ciano, Emily Argo, Michael Newcomer, and pilot Tom Hinds. All four were found among the plane's wreckage. MRC sends our condolences to their families.

A memorial fund at Wildlife Trust is being established for anyone who would like to contribute money to a conservation fund in memory of our friends. Checks can be made out to Wildlife Trust and sent to Wildlife Trust, 1200 Lincoln Park Ave., Suite 2, Prospect Park, PA 19076.
