Entangled Right Whale Spotted in January

MRC received a call on the whale hotline of a dead whale on February 16. Julie Albert, the Program Coordinator, was on the scene by 12:30 p.m. and confirmed a decomposed juvenile humpback whale at Canova Beach in Brevard County. It was determined to be a female about 3-4 years old. The next day the 25-30-foot long whale underwent a necropsy on the beach. The fleshy tissue was buried and the skeleton was taken to Hubbs-Sea World Research Institute. Unfortunately, the cause of death is believed to be a collision with a vessel.
