The National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Restoration Center has been supporting MRC efforts to remove invasive species along Lagoon Shorelines. So far this year over a million square feet of Brazilian Pepper and Australian Pine has been removed in Martin and St. Lucie County, a million in Indian River County and two million in Brevard County. That is over 100 acres of habitat restored. In the photo to the left, Mike Renda of Blowing Rocks Preserve is out with volunteers from MRC, The Nature Conservancy and the Florida Oceanographic Society as they remove invasives from Bonair Beach and Hobe Sound Wildlife Refuge in Martin County. So far this year, volunteers have put in almost 2,000 man hours to clear over 15,000 feet of shoreline. MRC organizes events like this one every week in Martin, St. Lucie, Indian River and Brevard County. To volunteer call (321) 504-4500 or (772) 429-1200.
