The Natural Resources Defense Council sued the government to restrict use of the weedkiller atrazine, contending it harms endangered species in waterways in the Midwest and South.
Numerous varieties of turtles and mussel may be threatened. Atrazine is spread on lawns and cornfields and is linked to prostate cancer and deformities in frogs.
NRDC's petitions are due to be issued this fall.
