The Sea Rocket, Cakile lanceoata is a low growing succulent plant covered with small white flowers. It is found along the shore of the Indian River Lagoon and on beach dunes from the Florida Keys to the Carolinas. This hardy plant thrives in the salty air, strong sun, and sandy soil. Its dense growth is an excellent place for little shoreline critters to take cover from the harsh sun or predators. Since it grows on the frontline of the beaches and Lagoon, the Sea Rocket helps to stabilize shoreline for the establishment of more permanent species. The flower buds, green seed pod, stems and leaves were cooked historically and used to treat scurvy because of its high Vitamin C content.
