US Fish & Wildlife Helps Remove Half a MIllion square feet of Invasives in Martin and St. Lucie Counties

MRC Staff and Volunteers Plant Over 800 Mangroves

Funding provided by US Fish & Wildlife Services, US Fish & Wildlife Foundation, and Florida Coastal Management Program supported MRC removing 593,728 square feet of invasive species in Martin and St. Lucie Counties including 1355 feet of lagoon shoreline. MRC staff and volunteers treat invasives by hand with no disturbing of the roots or soil to avoid erosion. When heavy equipment is used, the ground is left disturbed, subject to erosion and new invasions of exotics. Heavy equipment can also destroy native plants that are growing alongside the invasives. Sites worked on by the MRC are also monitored to insure that seeds dropped from old trees do not sprout and reinvade the habitat.
