RIGHT WHALE PLANE CRASHES OFFSHORE

On January 26 a right whale aerial survey team consisting of 3 scientists and a pilot crashed approximately eight miles off the coast of Fernandina Beach. The twin-engine Cessna took off from St. Simon's Island, Georgia, around 2:30 p.m. and was reported overdue at 6:30 p.m. that night.

The Coast Guard located the plane's emergency beacon at approximately 9:30 p.m. and found debris in the area including life jackets, a backpack, papers, and film canisters.

The right whale community is saddened by the loss of researchers Emily Argo, Jackie Ciano, and Michael Newcomer, and pilot Tom Hinds. All four were found at the crash site. MRC sends our condolences to their families and friends.

A memorial fund at Wildlife Trust has been established for anyone who would like to contribute money in memory of our friends. Checks can be made out to Wildlife Trust, Att: Heroes of the Sea Memorial Fund, and sent to Wildlife Trust, 1200 Lincoln Ave., Suite 2, Prospect Park, PA 19076
