Responsible Photographers Needed

With the loss of four survey crew members and their plane coupled with the suspension of survey flights, photographers are needed to aid in photo-identification efforts. Without photos to document the whereabouts of the whales in Florida and to identify the individuals, calf counts may be low and we may miss several opportunities to gather data to understand right whale behavior.

A strong zoom lens is needed in order to get detailed photos from the beach. In the past, a 400mm lens with a 2X teleconverter was used to obtain photos. You should be available on a moment's notice and must maintain a minimum 500-yard distance between you and the whales. A high vantage point is a plus (e.g. condo balcony). If you are interested in helping us photograph the whales that visit Florida next winter, please call the Marine Resources Council at 321-504-4500.
